ITALY : WEEK 2

Being in Tuscany, there is a great expectation to paint finished pictures. In many ways, i've found it to be more difficult, because the beauty seems unapproachable, unattainable and overwhelming . Its SO amazing!!. However, its only a matter of time until it all begins to flow. Somedays, it seems to make sense, other days are more courageous and we experiment, daring to stand before it all, as others have, and record something of the way we see it.
Below are some quick sketches I completed up in Cortona as a part of the children's workshop. I try not to waste any opportunity so i carry charcoal, watercolors, whatever tools available for study.

This oil painting was executed a bit differently in that i put down a lean layer first. I usually go straight to the value, noting it frankly in its simplicity.

Plein Air Study of Cortona, Italy

ITALY : WEEK 1

Saluti ! the past week or so its been a hike up the hill to the beautiful township

of Cortona, Italy to draw or paint. Thats where I needed to be, or so i thought.  One particularly
cold day I decided just to paint from the balcony of our house. Below is the work. Though its not as
minimal as i'd hoped for, it's structure holds together well with simple masses and texture.
